Derek Hale survived the Hale Fire that slaughtered most of his family by being at school. As soon as he graduated, he left town as quickly as he could to escape the memories.
When his sister Laura returned to town, Derek quickly followed -- not soon enough, however, to prevent her murder. He found her body sliced in half.
Season 1[]
Derek quickly learned that Scott McCall was a new werewolf and sought to help him. Scott, refusing to trust Derek, quickly aided the Sunnydale Police Department in making Derek a suspect for his sister's murder. When the cause of death, however, was found to be an animal, Derek was released.
He avoided Scott for a few days afterwards, until circumstances forced Derek to intervene in order to prevent Scott from battling with Buffy Summers while vampires were on the loose.
When Scott believed he had murdered someone while wolfed out, Derek guided him through remembering the event. Afterwards, Scott accused Derek of committing the crime instead. To prove his innocence, Derek explained that there was a another werewolf in town -- one he hoped to find. With Scott's help, Derek began earnestly seeking out the werewolf. In the course of this, Derek was shot by one of Kate Argent's wolfsbane-laced bullets. Unable to heal or control himself, he sought out Scott.
Instead, he encountered Jackson Whittemore -- accidentally scratching him on the back of his neck during their confrontation. Derek ultimately collapsed in the parking lot of Sunnydale High School -- there Scott and his friends Stiles Stilinski and Xander Harris quickly put together a plan to help him. Eventually, with a cure found by Willow Rosenberg's hasty research and a sample of the wolfsbane procured by Scott, they were able to cure the poison infecting Derek's veins.
Afterwards, to convince Scott not to trust the Argent Werewolf Hunters, he introduced the new werewolf to his uncle Peter Hale, still in a coma from the fire at the Hale House years ago. It was here, at the Sunnydale Assisted Living Community, they encountered Buffy who informed them that she had tracked the Alpha werewolf to the nursing home.
